Friday Knight Games

Sisters of Battle + Grey Knights vs Tau + Eldar at 1850

I was going to write up a battle report for this battle, but my phone was dead at turn one and I didn't get any pictures, I then failed to get any pictures of a couple other turns, while getting to many of the turns I did.  As such, I'll just briefly summarize that the game was hammer and anvil and the relic.  I went first but having focused all my shooting on his commander, who was 2+ with FNP and leading a drone squad, that I failed to get first blood.  Mike wrecked my immobilized Exorcist for First blood instead.  At the end of the game I chose to try to play for a win rather than a tie and moved Justicar Thawn out of Mikes deployment and tried to assault his firewarriors to then slingshot toward the relic.  He died for the 3rd time in the game, the second to overwatch fire, and I ended up losing 1 point to 2 (nobody had the relic, we both had slay the warlord and Mike had first blood.)  If they hadn't nurfed Celestine to only getting back up once a game, It could have been a tie game still but they did, and she was dead at the end of the game, no linebreaker for me.

Had I not been trying to play a more "friendly" list with no Dreadknight I probably could have managed a win here, but at least Mike doesn't run any Riptides so it was a good game that came down to turn 6 to decide a winner.

As to my list, as expected the dominion squad with 3 flamers and a meltagun sucked.  I need more meltagun sisters models so I can run them properly with 4 meltaguns in a heavy flamer immolator.  Also the squads of 5 sisters with 1 heavy bolter just never seem to do much.  Their volume of fire is not sufficient to matter, nor does it have the range to play shooty versus the Tau.  All in all, the Grey Knights "allies" always seem to do all the heavy lifting, while the sisters still feel more like a tax than an asset.  I may try losing the terminators and thawn, and the stormraven, and instead take 1 12pt henchman squad and a Dreadknight with Personal Teleporter, Sword, and heavy incinerator.  Then use the spare points to try to make the "Sisters" component contribute something more to the list.

Here are the pictures I did get, mostly of Turn 3 and 4 I think as the terminators assaulted the wraithguard blob on turn 3 which is shown in this first image having lost some models to shooting, but not yet being assaulted.

I did my best to minimize the supporting fire options prior to my assault on the
wraithguard, but he still managed to get in shooting from 2 units plus the wraithguard.

The stormraven wrecked the two piranha squadron on turn 2 when it arrived.

Top of turn 3, rolled a 2" consolidation move after assaulting wraithguard
so I just spread out some to avoid being hit by large blasts.

I called this cock-blocking the relic with my Stormraven in skimmer mode.

Remaining Dominion squad chasing that interceptor Drone.

Mikes Deadpool at the bottom of the image, still wasn't enough for a win.

Stormraven died having gone to skimmer mode on my turn 3 so the termies
could assault the wraiths.  It pretty well paid for itself in the two turns it
was on the board.

Ah celestine, you killed those three firewarriors, but should
have stayed in cover by the Piranha instead.

This was bottom of turn 4 I think.  Before Thawn got back up and tried
to assault the firewarrios that had moved over to the ruin near the Relic.
Also before Celestine died the 2nd time.

Tau/Eldar Vs. Iron Hands Space Marines 1850

The Relic:

An Unexpected Result

In preperation for the Marmalade Dog Tournament on the 9th of February, I schedule a practice game today with Brian, whom I've never played.  He had posted looking for a game on a facebook group I follow, and so we arranged to meet up, originally at 1500pts, but then I discovered I'd got my dates confused and that M.D. was 1850 not 1500, so we upped the limit so I could try out a new list.

We rolled "the relic" and "hammer and anvil" as mission/deployment.

I brought my Tau with Eldar allies utilizing some much maligned units as the M.D. tournament has some judging based on painting and modeling, and so I wanted to get in some of my better looking, or more heavily modified models.  This is what my list consisted of:

Brian won the roll off to choose sides, and we deployed our fortifications, he then set up a narrative terrain board while I was digging my models out of my army bag/boxes..  After we rolled Warlord traits (he got a scoring HQ, I got move through cover then promptly forgot about it all game) and psychic powers (don't recall what his librarian used, I got preciance, perfect timing, psychic shreak, and dominate) we rolled for night fighting (not on turn 1) and for deployment.  He won the rolloff and chose to go first.

He held the dreadnaught/dropod, Warlord attached to Terminators, and Stormtalon in reserve.  He combat squaded the two large tactical squads, placing the hvy wpns portions behind the defense line, while putting the 3 non heavy weapon teams into the Razorbacks.  The assault team with librarian attached, and the predator also deployed behind the defense line.

I in turn deployed with Eldrad and my Ethereal attached to the broadside team with Eldrad touching the Icarus Lascannon.  Shadowsun deployed also in contact of the Lascannon.  The firewarriors deployed against my defense line, with the Vespid behind them (the first time I've started a game with them not in reserve) and the Kroot encircled Shadowsun and Eldrad to give cover and prevent assaults.  The Darkreapers deployed in a piece of terrain in the back right corner, while the Pathfinder/rangers infiltrated in terrain in the DMZ.  The Ion-Heads deployed with their backs to the board edge to avoid easy back armor shots (I give up first blood quite often by forgetting to do this) and I reserved the Monat Crisis suit.

I then rolled to sieze, and for the first time in ages, did so.  I then forgot to ask how Brian handled Psychic powers, weather they occur at the start of the players movement phase, or the beginning of the Psychers movement phase as indicated in the brb under the description for blessings.  I also forgot that Eldrad can move D3+1 units prior to Scout moves.. as I deployed second, that was less important, but I then also forgot my scout moves.. I'll have to make a note for the tournament, those two things could cost me a game.

Turn 1, Top: Lacking any psychic activity, I moved the Ion-heads forward (totally blocking half of the Dark reapers LOS in the process) and they each fired at a seperate Razorback, but scored one hit and a glance I believe.  The broadsides who would have normally fired on the Quadgun and Predator chose instead to fire on the Razorback to the left of the defense line (from my perspective) because he had reinforced the defense line to a 3+ cover save, and two of the broadsides had a clear shot on the razorback.  I also fired the icarus at said razorback as part of that squads fire.  This was enough to explode it (1") and gave me first blood.  Not sure what I shot the other units at this turn.

Turn 1, bottom:  He deepstruck in his Dreadnaught near an ion-head after it scattered away from my Warlord (I put a glancing hit on it with interceptor fire from the icarus).  He moved his remaining Razorbacks forward, and followed the one on the right with his assault squad.  That razorback also popped smoke.  The dreadnaught scored a hit on the Ion-Head and it exploded (thank goodness I had siezed and already had first blood).  I believe he also killed the shield drone from my broadsides, and a firewarrior that turn.

Turn 2, Top:  My Monat Crisis suit arrived and landed on target, is subsequently scored a penetrating hit but only managed to destroy the main gun on the Predator, and got one hit on the squad on the other side of it with it's flamer.   Shadowsun jumped towards the dreadnaught and split-fire on it and the drop pod with her fusion blasters.  She exploded the pod, but immobilized the dreadnaught leaving it with one hull point.  razorback and destroying the gun.

The Dark Reapers (3) in it's rear arc fired on it scoring one glancing hit and wrecked it.  My remaining Ion-head advanced and shot at the left razorback immobilizing it.  The broadsides with prescience split fire at the right razorback and the quad gun exploding the I think the pathfinders fired on either the assault squad, or the marines in the crater of the recently exploded razorback.  Shadowsun moved back into contact with the Icarus

Turn 2, Bottom:  This is the point where the game took a bad turn for Brian.  His Warlord and assault terminators attempted to deepstrike in behind my broadside team.  Instead they scattered onto the kroot and mishapped.  He rolled a 3, and I got to place them.  Normally this would mean they landed in the far corner never to be seen again.  However, it being his warlord, I wanted him where I could shoot at him, so I placed him in the center of the board between the relic and the ruin in his zone.

Had I remembered at the time that his warlord was scoring, I may have put him in the corner anyway, but I forgot, and it worked out to my favor in the end.  His Stormtalon also arrived from reserves, zoomed in to the center of the board, and was promptly shot and exploded by the Icarus interceptor fire.  I felt bad about that one as it was just pure bad luck on his part that I got a lucky hit, and he never even got to fire his weapons on the thing..  He ran his terminators towards the relic, shot his missile launchers, moved his Assault squad and Librarian towards my defense line, disembarked from the imobilized and only remaining Razorback,  and shot at, then assaulted my Monat Crisis suit.  I scored 3 hits with the flamer, and a hit with the Fusion Blaster in overwatch and killed two marines.  He had put a wound on my in shooting, but I saved all the assault wounds, and failed to inflict any, we remained locked in combat.

Turn 3, Top: I believe it was this turn that I technically screwed up on my Psychic phase.. Eldrad is allowed to cast 3 powers a turn, so I put prescience on both the Vespid, and the Firewarriors, then, as I planned to fire on the terminators with my broadsides, I also cast it on the broadsides instead of perfect timing, as they would grant no cover to them anyway, and the terminators were out of range of my psychic screach which I have yet to use..  Problem with this is that Eldrad can only cast the same power twice a turn (due to his staff), and had already used Prescience twice.. Ultimately it had no impact on the game as the Icarus couldn't fire having fired interceptor fire on turn 2, and all the rest of my weapons are already twin linked.. But it annoys me to forget that sort of thing even if it was my 4th game ever using psychers.. Another place for a note to be written so I don't forget apparently.  The vespid moved up 6" on the ground so they could use their jump move to Hammer of Wrath the assault marines (which are behind that piece of terrain with the columns), however, between their now twin-linked Str 5 AP3 shooting, and the Dark Reapers Str 5 Ap3 shooting, the assault squad was wiped out, so no assault was required. The firewarriors shot at the 2 marines in the Razorback crater to the right killing one.  The broadsides, the Ion-Head and what kroot could fired at his Warlord killing three Terminators.  Again, I've no idea where the Pathfinders fired, but I think it was at the terminators.

Turn 3, Bottom:  He moved the terminators/warlord into contact with the Relic.  Moved the tac squad to the left up to the ruins.  I think the missile launchers may have fired on the Icarus this turn but failed to kill it causing 1 wound.  The assault continued but no unsaved wounds were inflicted.  The heavy bolters on the predator fired at and killed one pathfinder.

Turn 4, Top:  I moved the vespid up the right flank.  Moved the Ion-head up around towards the terminators/relic, while moving my firewarriors and Kroot towards the Relic.  Shadowsun followed suit and moved up to engage the terminators with her 12" fusion blasters (heaven forbid the Tau figure out the 24" multi-melta technology), and everyone else remained in place.  The vespid shot and killed the seargent in the razorback crater, and everyone else fired at the Terminators eventually killing them.  The assault continued to no effect.

Turn 4, Bottom:  Brian conceded the game at this point.  I was up 2 points to none, and there was no chance he could score linebreaker.  With all his transports out of commission he'd have had to foot slog the two missile launcher Tac squads up 16 or so inches to reach the relic meaning he could only get there at best bottom of turn 5, and with the majority of my army still in play that just wasn't going to happen.

The final board condition after turn 4

I think this game could have gone vastly differently if not for the lack of terrain.  Having the relic in the middle of a no-mans land with no cover, and nothing blocking my shooting to his defense line really made it tough to get near the relic, and tougher still to survive when exposed to that much shooting.  Brian chose the narrative terrain as he felt it would be faster, and I'm not sure how much more terrain he had on hand, but I still feel the alternating terrain gives a better result and lets you place some terrain to your advantage rather than feeling obligated to make it "fair".. It's war, I don't think it should be fair if you can help it..  When I was in the marines they always liked to say "Be prepared to die for your country, but make the other guy die for his".. I'm not sure how that applies here, but I'm going to claim that "gaming it" by placing terrain to your advantage, is a step toward that goal.

Thanks for the Game Brian, and I'll look forward to a rematch, perhaps at the tournament in Lansing on the 16th?

Eldar Allies Part 2.

Eldar Allies W.I.P.

So I spent part of last weak painting some of my new Eldar allies.

They are playable as is, but need some detail work and some basing done on them still.  Either way I thought I'd throw them up here to see what people thought of them.

Eldrad has about 2 hours of painting in currently.. I rushed a bit on the other models, especially the Dark Reapers.  All of the models are old OOP Metal models, so I had to cut the pointy heads off the dark reapers to make them look more like the newer ones, and to make the "Exarch" stand out as I don't have a special weapon for him.

The color scheme is based off of the Ulthwe colors for eldrad, mixed with some greens to tie them into my Tau, and the purplish color that the Dark Reaper guns are often portrayed as.  So far I'm pretty pretty happy with the way they look.

2000 pts Tau vs Eldar

I had the opportunity this evening to get in my last, or next to last game of 5th edition prior to 6th hitting Saturday against Eric of http://thewildriderhost.blogspot.com/ 's Eldar army.  The game was 2000 points and we rolled seize ground 3 objectives, and capture and control as our missions.  The deployment was dawn of war and I won the roll off to go first, and Eric failed to seize the initiative.
My phone died after turn 1 deployment, so I have no pictures, sorry.

Army list wise, I ran a Farsight enclave with a 955 point farsight and bodyguard squad, with 7 helios (fusion blaster, plasma rifle, shield generator) body guards, 4 with target locks, one with failsafe detonator, and one with stimulant injector.  I mixed up the other options enough to have 7 unique suits for wound allocation, plus 6 shield drones.  I also had 2 6 man firewarrior teams with Shas'ui with EMP grenades (just the shas'ui), 2 Broadsides with Plasma team leader with 2 shield drones, shield generator HWMT, HWTL, and the 2nd broadside running a multi-tracker.  One shas'vre Crisis suit (mandatory) with MP, Flamer and Pos Relay and a shield drone.  1x 3man stealth suit team, teamleader with markerlight.  Skyray.  Eight Pathfinders including Shas'ui, DFish with DPod and drones.  Lastly I had an IonHead with DPod and Bust Cannons.

Eric ran 2 9man jetbike squads with Warlock and attached farseer's with Fortune and Guide.  2 Wave serpants with holo fields carrying 5 man Fire Dragon teams including Exarchs with flamer, 2 Dire Avengers troops of 7+1 Exarch and a night spinner.

I deployed Farsight and friends strung out along the center of the board, with the firewarriors at either flank  in terrain 12" from the edge or so, and in cover to force him to deploy in the 6" band on his edge.  All but my 3 stealth suits (deepstriking) walked on on turn 1.  Eric deployed one jetbike squad with attached farseer in the far right corner.  The rest of his forces came on on turn one.

Since I don't have pictures, I'll save the play by play..  Due to some amazing roles by my pathfinders, skyray and stealth teams markerlights, I managed to wipe out both Jetbike teams and their Farseers'.  I wrecked 2 Wave Serpents, depleted a Firedragon team down to just the Exarch and wiped out most of a Dire Avenger team and removed the twin linked wpn from another wave serpant.  I also got my first ever glancing hit with an EMP grenade on turn one from a Shas'ui which charged into a Wave Serpant along with his team.  It took a Dire Avenger squad and a Fire Dragon team 4+ assault phases to finally wipe them out.  Unfortuneately, the Shas'Vre that was contesting his Capture and Control Objective Died while Jumping into Difficult Terrain in the Top of Turn 6, leaving his 3 remaining Dire Avengers in that area to Cap the point.  All the other points were contested, and so Eric won One to nothing.

All in all, it was an amazing battle, and as always Eric was a great opponent and we had a great time.  I plan to get in one more 5th edition Game at Big Kidz Games tomorrow before 6th hits on Saturday.  Hopefully I can redeem my Farsight list which is now something like 5 wins 1 loss in the last month or so..

Or, I think tomorrow, I'm going to try to run a Shadowsun list, that has at least 1 of every unit possible ( I don't own a space pope model, and can't run Farsight, but I will run my Ethereal with honor Guard).. I will probably leave the Skyray at home so I can run 3 sniper Drone teams, I'll skip the gun drone squadron, but will make a gun drone team by detaching them from my Piranha squadron, and will otherwise make the army as stealthy as possible.. 2 6 man stealth teams, 2 16 Kroot Kroot Teams infiltrating, Pathfinders outflanking and Tankshocking on turn 2 if possible.  It's not a winning strategy, but when the Vespid hit the board, oh look out.. no ones gonna know what to do then..

On another thought all together, I bought 3 more Mark I Rhino's from Eric today bringing my Total up too 8 Mark I rhino chassis for my sisters of battle army.  3 will get converted to Exorsists, 3 into imolators for my Dominion squads, and 2 as Rhino's as transports for Jacobus and the Battle Conclave, and 1 for my Sisters Repentia..  Assuming 6th doesn't have some rules that make that a horrid build.

Tau vs Eldar, then Tau vs IG

This is an Edit to my original post.  After checking my armylist, I accidentally ran 3 piranha in both games, when there is only one in this list.  Stupid Army builders printed list said "Piranha 3" and I didn't read further to see that that was the model count including gun drones..  Either way, some interesting shots and interesting results from individual units.  Sorry to Eric and Josh for the mistake.

I got in 2 games Friday at Big Kidz Games.  I don't have time for a proper battle report for them as I also forgot to take pictures during a few turns of both games.  So I'll make a brief summation then just dump some photos to show some of the action.

First game Tau Vs. Eldar 1500pt

This was a close game vs Eric's Eldar.  We rolled pitched battle, with Seize Ground and Annihilation as objectives.  Eric won the roll and chose to go first, I failed to seize the initiative.  He was running his standard list as far as I could tell,  I had a Shadowsun list I'd made as a possible list for the team battle.  Notable unit choices in it were the 3 Sniper Drone Teams, 2 10 man firewarrior teams, and of course Commander Shadowsun herself.  I have to apologize to Eric, I assumed everyone was familiar with the Tau Sniper Drones so I didn't bother pointing out there Str 6 AP3 shooting..  As a result, he parked a squad of jetbikes directly in front of them and ended up losing a fair number of them on one of my turns.  The game ended with out a roll to continue as it was after 11pm and he had to work the next day.. as such, I squeaked out a victory by snagging one objective and contesting the one he was sitting on by running my broadsides over to within 3" on my final turn, thus securing the Primary Objective.  I also won on kill points by 1 or 2..

Either way, it was a good game, and I learned that despite the internet wisdom that sniper drones suck (and they do have their weaknesses) having 9 models with 36" Str 6 AP3 shots with pinning doesn't suck, and due to their stealth fields, they make a great bait unit, as you have to get close to even target them, and you really can't ignore that sort of firepower.  This was the second time I'd ever fielded them, and I also learned that putting them in cover is a must, and really adds significantly to their durability as you might expect.  Without further ado, here are the pics for game one:

Game Two was vs Josh's Imperial guard using the same list I ran against Eric.
We rolled pitched battle, capture and control, and annihilation as objectives.

I won the roll off and chose to go first. Josh deployed part of his force's, and held some in reserve.  This may have been his downfall as it allowed me to focus fire on the few units on the board destroying his Leman Russ on my turn one, pinning a squad of troops, and killing part of a command squad.  The pictures I remembered to shoot will tell the tale up too where I forgot to take anymore..  The highlite of the game for me was after assaulting a chimera that came on at his board edge, he in turn tank shocked my crisis suits, and to his chagrin into Commander Shadowsun who stood her ground, death or gloried him and exploded his empty chirmera.. The crisis suit team made their leadership due to Shadowsun's drone, but fell back after his shooting caused them to lose a model (thank god as they would have been assaulted and wiped out by his veteran squad.  His best unit was probably his Leman Russ Executioner with its plasma blasts.  Also at the end game he killed a crisis suit out of a team of 2 (the ones he'd tank shocked) that were camping on his marker, forcing a leadership roll which I failed allowing him to control his objective.  I forced his storm troopers to fall back from near mine after unleashing 12 smart missles, 6 sniper drones, and 8 firewarriors at them.. He still had two models left in the unit after all that..

The game also had to end after 5 turns due too time.  Who knows what would have happened if it had continued.  As it was, we tied on the primary, as is always the case with both of us controlling our own objective.  I managed a slight win on kill points assuming all the vehicles in a squadron just count as one KP.. if not then it would have been a slighter win by 1..  As is usually the case, his transports gave me a lot of free kill points.

I didn't get many shots of this game, and I'm not 100% sure these are in order, I'm not really fond of Blogspots editor when it comes to placing photos.
